Dis/assembly ChairsMon Jul 19 2022
Completed as part of Grad Studio II, this project involved the industrial design of 40 flat pack chairs made using assembly/disassembly and traditional Japanese dry fit joinery methods. It was meant as a slow response to fast furniture, assembled once with intention.
The two completed prototypes were made from extremely lightweight Sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana), a softwood from the RISD Rare Woods Collection. Each piece embodies the notion of permanence in its ability to gradually expand into itself the longer it is assembled without the use of glue or screws.
